Old Château Certan, Pomerol, Red Bordeaux 2012, 75cl

“The brilliance of its color, the richness of its aromas, and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style.”

Vieux Château Certan is a combination of exceptional know-how and support. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines, Vieux Château Certan brings together the excellence of the estate's production each year.

Endowed with a natural concentration, the wines of Vieux Château Certan require a few years of aging in the cellar before the first bottles are opened. Like the greatest wines of Bordeaux, they will be appreciated after 10 or 15 years of age.

Robert Parker rating : 95/100

About the 2012 vintage

"A refined and balanced Merlot vintage

2012 climatic year typically Bordeaux:
Following a particularly cold and dry winter - down to -11°C - the cool and humid spring resulted in an early decrease in yields.
Highly anticipated, the summer was hot and dry. Thanks to a low yield and meticulous selection of the best bunches, the maturation proved to be very homogeneous.

Particularly tasty and flavorful, the fruits with thick skins until late in the season allowed for waiting for the right maturity of the different grape varieties. Consequently, the harvests were among the latest at Vieux Château Certan and were completed just hours before torrential rains.

The risks taken were largely rewarded. The merlots are ripe, opulent, and velvety. The necessary cabernet francs, but in limited proportion this year, bring delicacy, flavor, and complexity.

After a gentle extraction and three weeks of maceration, the wine continued its aging in new barrels for three quarters.

About the estate

Creator of Grand Vin since 1745

The Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known crus of Pomerol. Its foundation dates back to the early 16th century when the Demay family settled there, coming from Scotland.

Later, it is mentioned in 1785 on the Belleyme map under the name « Sertan ». In Pomerol, the locality Certan takes its name from the estate.

In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of the Vieux Château Certan. He is responsible for the current appearance of the buildings.

In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a wine merchant in the Flemish Ardennes, purchased the property. This marks the beginning of the family establishment in Bordeaux.

« In 1924, my grandfather Georges Thienpont bought the Vieux Château Certan »
