Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, Clos De La Marechale, Nuits Saint Georges premier cru, 2008, 75cl
Tasting
"Le Clos de la Maréchale presents the frankness, the straightness, the solidity of the wines of Nuits-saint-Georges, but without the austerity and rough tannins of the young wines from the central sector of Nuits. These are wines that require a few years of aging before fully revealing themselves, but they then develop a typical floral character tinged, it seems, with raspberry, iris, and white lilac."
Food and wine pairings
Braised duck with peas, veal shank with vegetables, roasted stuffed goose, lobster with red wine, partridges, sweetbreads with morels, roasted quail, duck fillets, beef bourguignon, roasted woodcock, stew, lobster with coral sauce, spring veal chop, royal hare, matured rib of beef.

About the cuvée
INTRODUCTION
On November 1, 2003, the estate expanded suddenly from 4 to 14 hectares. The Clos de la Maréchale, exclusively owned by the Mugnier family since 1902, returned to the operation after a lease that lasted 53 years.
HISTORY
The origin of the name of this clos is unknown to us. In 1855, this vineyard was still known as “Clos des Fourches,” then in 1892 as “Clos Maréchal,” before becoming in the 20th century the “Clos de la Maréchale.”
The research of historian Jean-François Bazin has shown that no marshal or any marshal's wife from the Second Empire had any connection with this village. Further research is necessary. To be continued...
THE PLOT
The Clos de la Maréchale is a plot of 9 ha 76 ares. It is the largest monopoly (appellation belonging to a single owner) in Côte d’Or. The average age of the vines in 2008 is about 45 years.
THE VINES
Historically, the wines of Premeaux are regularly described as being among the best Nuits-saint-Georges, with a character that is less “spirited” (alcoholic) and “exquisitely fine.”
The geological layer on which the Clos de la Maréchale is located plunges south beneath the surface of the soil, marking the end of the Côte de Nuits, to reappear at Montrachet, between Puligny and Chassagne. It is therefore not surprising to find in the wines the qualities of power and longevity.
History of the domain
Founded in 1863 by Frédéric MUGNIER, a liquorist in Dijon, the estate included nearly twenty hectares in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-saint-Georges at the beginning of the 20th century. It was operated, along with the liqueur factory, by the sons and grandsons of Frédéric until 1949. Before the creation of the appellations of origin, as early as 1878, the wines of the estate were sold under labels bearing the sole mention “Château Chambolle-Musigny,” following the Bordeaux example.
In 1950, Jacques-Frédéric MUGNIER, great-grandson of Frédéric, born in 1923, sold the liqueur business, which had been severely weakened by the war and economic difficulties, and leased the vineyard, reduced over the years by inheritance, to a large wine house in Nuits-saint-Georges.
Jacques-Frédéric MUGNIER took over the direct management of the Chambolle vineyards from 1978 until his death, and in 1985, Frédéric MUGNIER, son of Jacques-Frédéric, took full responsibility for the family estate.
Today, around Jocelyne and Frédéric Mugnier, the permanent team of the Domaine: Adeline, Audrey, Damien, Fabien, Guillaume, Patrick, and Philippe, pays attention day after day to every detail so that, from vine to cellar, and up to your glass, nothing is lost of the best of nature.
