About the appellation
Ten kilometers south of Beaune, one discovers this small place of the Côte, crucible of the very great whites of Burgundy with first a certain surprise compared to our steep terroirs of the Côte de Nuits: a “mountain” quite flat and arid of the former form “ Mont Rachet ” (“bald mountain”) which over time became Montrachet.
According to legend, the name of this Grand Cru white comes from the division of the land by the Lord of Montrachet between his two sons: one became a Knight by fighting the enemy during the Crusades and the other, illegitimate, who would have given the name to the Bâtard-Montrachet located just below Montrachet.
