Tasting

The nose is relatively discreet but very sharp, with alternating notes of red fruits, minerals, wood, and smoke. We find this complexity on the palate. Despite a great concentration, the tannins do not clash with the palate. The wine is straight, long, precise. Behind a facade of austerity, we discover a wine of great elegance and refinement. With the 2004 vintage, Château Haut-Brion has crafted one of the great wines of the year.

About the estate and its terroir

The vineyard of Château Haut-Brion is located in the municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of Bordeaux. It is part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, to the north of the Bordeaux Graves wine region.

The estate faces Château La Mission Haut-Brion and shares with it this vast terrace of beautiful gravels known as Haut-Brion on old maps and charters.
These gravels that contribute to the viticultural value of the soil of Château Haut-Brion are small pebbles, made up of different varieties of quartz. The gravel soils rest on a unique subsoil of clay, sand, limestone, and faluns (shell limestone) established from the end of the Tertiary era, and then during the Quaternary throughout the glacial episodes.
With a thickness ranging from about twenty centimeters to over 3 meters, the gravel deposits form rises that benefit from excellent exposure, with slopes ensuring natural drainage reinforced by an important hydrographic network of small watercourses, such as the Peugue or the Serpent, tributaries of the Garonne.
The vines of Haut-Brion benefit from a particular climatic character: summers are hot and dry, and autumns are mild. The terraced vines, 20 to 30 meters above sea level, escape the fog of the lower Garonne valley and the sometimes abundant rains of the Gironde moor.
