Tasting

Source Domain

At first glance, Krug 2008 reveals a bright and intense golden hue. The nose is expressive, rich, and generous, with patinated aromas of honey, licorice, menthol, orange peel, and grapefruit. Lively, intense, and harmonious, with a beautiful tension on the palate, notes of quince, candied fruits and citrus, yellow kiwi, starfruit, honey, apple pie, petit beurre, orange peel, peony, and fennel, along with floral and menthol touches stand out during tasting. Finally, the Krug 2008 vintage offers length on the palate while being precise and remarkably structured.

The House believes that each Krug Vintage expresses the unique character of a particular year. A Krug Vintage brings together the most expressive wines of the same year, enhanced by aging for more than ten years in the cellar. Each Krug Vintage is different: it is the Music of the year, transposed into the Krug universe.

Krug 2008 is the story, all in elegance and intensity, of a fresh and balanced year, which our tasting committee has dubbed “Timeless Elegance.”

Notes and expert reviews

James Suckling: 100/100
“An exceptional freshness enhanced by aromas of flint, flowers, almonds, and lemons. Hazelnut and raspberry are also part of the experience. A complex champagne. On the palate, it oscillates between power and softness and reveals complex citrus aromas stimulated by lasting acidity. An exceptional Krug 2008.”

The guide to the best wines of France: 98/100
“The Krug 2008 expresses all the freshness of this vintage well; it is a classic 2008 without excess power. This wine impresses with its finesse on the palate.”

About the Krug house

The House was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary nonconformist with an uncompromising philosophy. His dream was to create the best Champagne possible each year, regardless of annual climatic variations. Joseph Krug achieved his dream by paying particular attention to the character of the vineyard, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, and building a vast library of reserve wines from different years.

With a traditional approach to making Champagne, he decided to go beyond the very notion of vintage in order to create, each year, the most generous expression of Champagne. Thus, he founded a House where all Champagnes would be of the same level of distinction.

Since then, six generations of the Krug family have pursued this dream, enriching the vision and expertise of the founder of the House.

THE VISION

When Joseph Krug founded the Champagne House that bears his name in 1843, driven by the belief that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to create the most generous expression of Champagne each year, regardless of annual climatic variations.
It surpasses all known limits of Champagne creation, founding a House where all Champagnes would be of the same level of distinction. In 1848, he recorded his vision in the pages of his personal cherry-colored notebook.

In principle, a good House should only produce two cuvées from blends of similar composition: Cuvée N°1: this composition should be recreated every year. If the wines are full-bodied, then lighter wines from previous years should be used... And vice versa if the wines are too light, like those from 1848. Cuvée N°2: […] As with Cuvée N°1 and depending on the circumstances.

About the Champagne Krug Brut Vintage 2008

Due to the remarkable mildness of the climate in 2008, the grapes were able to ripen peacefully, which gave them a beautiful freshness at the time of harvest. Surprisingly, despite these conditions, we observed a great diversity from one plot to another. The beauty of this contrast led us to integrate complementary flavors and aromas from different plots, including those of Aÿ, Bouzy, and Ambonnay. Krug 2008 is one of our great classics.

The year 2008 was one of the coolest of the last 14 years, but also one of the least sunny in Champagne in nearly half a century. The rainfall was not excessive during the growth of the vines while the summer was dry. This was followed by ideal climatic conditions during the harvest. The absence of strong heat during the summer of 2008 allowed for a slow and gradual ripening of the grapes.

At Krug, the year 2008 gave birth to a timeless Champagne, perfectly balanced between freshness, structure, and aromatic richness. The unexpected variety of grape varieties translates into great complexity, and we observed a very wide spectrum of flavors and aromas during the harvest. For the final blend, our Chef de Caves selected the wines that conveyed all the complexity of 2008, in an admirably structured composition marked by the elegance of that year.

For the final creation, we chose the wines that best highlighted the exceptional character of 2008. The Pinots Noirs, which make up more than half of the blend (53%), mainly come from the famous plots on the southern slope of the Montagne de Reims, particularly those of Aÿ, Mareuil, Bouzy, and Ambonnay. The Meuniers (25%), full of tension, bring citrus notes, while the flavor-rich wines from the Chardonnay plots (22%) add a fruity note to the whole.

After 12 years spent in our cellars, Krug 2008 has gained in expression and presents a remarkable, precise, and harmonious profile.
